Pricing a Solid Roof on an Existing Conservatory
The most complete answer to a conservatory that is unusable in July and January. It also costs you light, adds weight your frames may or may not carry, and turns the job into regulated building work.

How much does a solid conservatory roof cost?
Note the implied rate falling as the roof grows. Fixed costs do not scale with area, which is why we band by size rather than multiplying a rate by your square metres.

What a solid roof adds, and what it saves
The saving is a comfort saving before it is a money saving. A conservatory with a polycarbonate roof loses heat through the roof faster than any other surface in your house. A solid roof built to current standards reaches 0.15 W/m²K, which is better than the wall it joins.
What you lose is light, and that loss is the single most common regret.
| Property | Figure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| U-value, insulated solid roof | 0.15 W/m²K | The standard the roof must reach. Not one of the thirteen competing pages we surveyed publishes any W/m²K figure at all |
| Weight, lightweight tile system | 31 to 38 kg/m² | What your existing frames have to carry |
| Added load over a translucent roof | about 0.5 kN/m | LABC's own figure. Under ten per cent more than a typical translucent roof |
| Cladover warning threshold | under £6,000 | Ultraframe's own guidance: a tiled quote below this is probably a cladover, not a true solid roof |
| Roof window or lantern, fitted | £450 to £1,200 each | 2.7× spread, and it is one publisher contradicting itself between its price guide and its own worked example. We publish both ends |

Get quotes on a solid roof
No online calculator can tell you whether your existing frames are steel reinforced. LABC says that, not the foundations, is the real structural risk. That is what the free survey is for, and it is the commonest reason a tiled roof quote changes.
