A kit is not the same thing as a roll of foil, and at the smaller sizes it is not obviously cheaper than paying someone. The size of your roof decides whether doing it yourself saves money at all, and there is one job on this page that you are not allowed to sign off yourself whoever holds the screwdriver.

What a conservatory roof insulation DIY kit comes to

A multifoil kit for a 3m × 3m conservatory is £1,200 to £1,400 including VAT, supplied for you to fit. Thin evidence: one publisher, 11 December 2024, checked 20 August 2026. That is the only table of multifoil kit prices by conservatory size published in the UK, which is why every figure in this section carries the same single-publisher caveat and none of them can be graded higher.

Note what that is not. Bare multifoil is £10 to £20 per square metre as a material (Thin evidence, one publisher, 2 July 2026, checked 20 August 2026), so nine square metres of foil is under £200. A kit adds the battens, the tapes, the trims and the internal finish, cut and packaged for a conservatory roof. Which means the useful number is never the kit price on its own, it is the kit price against what the same roof costs fitted, and that is the comparison the search results never make. Read across the rows and the answer to the title question is a size, not a principle. At 6 and 9 square metres the kit floor sits above the fitted floor: an aluminium panel ceiling at 3m × 3m is £1,050 to £1,200 fitted, against £1,200 to £1,400 for a kit you then spend a weekend installing. At 16 square metres and above the kit is below the fitted band at both ends, and by 48 square metres it is roughly half. The crossover sits between 9 and 16 square metres, and nobody publishes a 12 square metre row on either side of it, so we cannot tell you where exactly.

Both columns rest on one publisher each. The insulation category has almost no independent price data in it. Every figure on this page is published as Thin evidence for that reason, and we would rather say so on each table than average two lonely numbers together and call the result a market rate.

Where the money goes when somebody else does it

One ratio explains the whole gap between a kit and a quotation, and it is the only figure here that reconciles the two halves of this market.

Labour is 65% to 75% of an installed insulation job. Thin evidence, one publisher, 2 July 2026, checked 20 August 2026. Apply it to the top of the fitted band and the arithmetic is unflattering to the kit: the materials inside a £2,750 plastered ceiling are worth roughly £690 to £960, which is less than the £1,200 to £1,400 a 3m × 3m kit costs. Our arithmetic, on two Thin rows from two different publishers, so treat it as an order of magnitude and not a quotation.

So a kit is not materials at trade cost. It is a packaged product with a margin on it, and what you are buying is the cutting, the compatibility and the instructions. Buying the raw materials instead is much cheaper and much harder.

The fitted rate per square metre for each ceiling finish sits on the insulation hub, and it is not comparable line by line, because it buys a frame, a finish and the labour as well.

Which board or foil you buy is its own question, and the spec sheets are where the marketing gets loudest. That is what insulation panels cost, by type rather than by kit. If you would rather not do any of it, fitting an insulated ceiling is the same job with a trade doing the frame and the finish.

When a kit is enough, and when it is not

A kit is enough when

  • The roof is 16 square metres or more, where the price gap is real
  • The complaint is February, not August
  • You can work safely at height with a second pair of hands
  • A panelled or foil-faced finish is acceptable to look at
  • The existing roof is sound, with no leaks and no cracked panels
  • You accept that the void above it has to be ventilated

A kit is the wrong purchase when

  • The roof is 9 square metres or less and a fitted panel ceiling undercuts it
  • You want a plastered ceiling that matches the house
  • The room is unusable in summer, which insulation underneath does not fix
  • The glazing bars or frames are moving, rotten or leaking
  • You are hoping it will make the room count as habitable, which it will not
  • Anyone has told you it will meet a building regulations standard

The finish is what people underestimate. A self-installed foil and panel ceiling in a garden room reads as a sensible bit of work. The same ceiling in a conservatory that opens off a kitchen reads as a conservatory that has had something done to it, and at the smaller sizes that is worth more than the money.

The regulations a do-it-yourself job has to respect

Two jobs get muddled together on DIY forums, and only one of them is free of the Building Regulations. Getting this wrong is the most expensive mistake available on this page.

Fitting insulation and a new ceiling below the roof you already have, leaving the glazing in place, is not notifiable work. While the conservatory still meets the five conditions in Approved Document L paragraph 0.14 (at ground level, floor area not over 30 m², glazing complying with Part K, the separating door or wall retained, and the dwelling's heating system not extended into it) it stays exempt under Schedule 2 Class 7 of the Building Regulations 2010. There is no application, no fee and nothing to certify.

Taking the translucent panels out and replacing them with a solid roof is regulated building work whoever installs it, and no competent person scheme can sign it off. Reduce the glazing significantly and the structure stops being the thing Schedule 2 Class 7 describes, the envelope comes into scope, and the roof becomes a thermal element that has to reach 0.15 W/m²K under Approved Document L Table 4.2. It goes to Local Authority Building Control or to a Registered Building Control Approver. Doing it yourself does not remove that duty, it just means nobody else is going to notice.

Two details worth having straight before anyone sells you boards. There is no percentage in the current rules: the “75 per cent glazed roof and 50 per cent glazed walls” test the industry still repeats was withdrawn by a DCLG circular on 28 September 2010, and the live test is whether a significant proportion of the walls and roof are glazed, decided case by case. And neither FENSA nor CERTASS covers this work: FENSA's own guidance puts conservatories outside its scheme, and a CERTASS CQ-Assured certificate is a Certificate of Conformity rather than a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate, and does not notify the local authority. If a supplier hands you a certificate, read what it certifies and check the date on its face. The practical safety points, which are not regulatory. A conservatory roof is not a working platform and glazing bars are not designed to be stood on, so the work is done from below on a tower or a hop-up rather than from above. Multifoil rolls are unwieldy overhead and the job wants two people. Anything that puts a downlight into a new ceiling is electrical work in a dwelling and brings Part P with it, so that part is not a do-it-yourself afternoon.

The middle row is the honest answer to “what U-value will I get?”. Nobody publishes one, so nobody can tell you, and a supplier quoting a laboratory figure for a roll of foil is not quoting a figure for your roof. What it does achieve is narrower and genuinely useful: a room usable in February rather than abandoned, and no drumming when it rains. It does much less for July. It adds no habitable floor area, appears on no EPC, and should never be sold to you as a route to compliance.

When a kit is not enough

A tiled or solid roof at 3m × 3m is £6,000 to £11,000 installed including VAT. Well evidenced, four publishers agreeing within 1.05x on the floor, checked 20 August 2026. That is roughly five times a kit at the same size, and the honest reason for the multiple is that it is a different category of thing: a structure with a plastered ceiling inside it, a building control record, and a room that works in July as well as February.

The case for spending it is narrow and specific. If both ends of the year are unusable, everything cheaper is money spent twice, and that argument is set out at the cost of a solid conservatory roof. Condensation afterwards

The complaint that follows self-installed jobs more often than any other, and it is on none of the commercial pages we surveyed: the room is warmer, and now there is water on the inside of the glass or a damp patch where the new ceiling meets the frame. The new ceiling has created a cold void above itself and a conservatory has almost no background ventilation.

An installer can be made to write the ventilation of that void into a quotation. A kit that arrives flat-packed decides nothing for you, which is the one real disadvantage of doing it yourself that has nothing to do with money. What to do if it has already happened is condensation after insulating. We publish no figure for putting it right, because nobody prices that job.

Will a kit stop the room being too hot in summer?
No, and it can make it worse. The solar gain still arrives through the same polycarbonate and now has a lid under it, so the heat that used to leave upwards on a cool night has a barrier in the way. If August is the complaint rather than February, this is the wrong purchase.
What goes wrong most often on a self-installed job?
Three things, in this order: an unventilated void above the new ceiling, which turns up as condensation in the first cold month; a finish that looks like a retrofit because the trims meet the frames badly; and headroom lost at the eaves, which is where a lean-to roof is already lowest. We hold no published figure for the depth of the build-up and will not invent one, so measure before you buy.
