Keeping a Conservatory Cool in Summer

Ten fixes, cheapest first, each with a price and an evidence grade. The free ones are about timing and air. The paid ones stop the sun before it reaches the glass, cut what the glass lets through, or take the heat out once it is inside.

How to keep a conservatory cool in summer, cheapest first

A conservatory gets too hot because the sun comes in through the roof and the walls faster than a closed room can lose the heat. Every fix below does one of three things: stops the sun before it reaches the glass, cuts what the glass lets through, or takes the heat out once it is inside. If the roof words are new, start with what conservatory roofs are made of.

All figures installed and including VAT, except row 4, which is the price of the unit. Rows 3 to 6 and 8 checked 14 September 2026, rows 7, 9 and 10 checked 20 August 2026. Row 8 includes the £400 to £700 of electrical work its publisher says has to be added. No publisher prices the tinted or solar control option on rows 7 and 9 separately. Row 2 is an absence, not a small number. We have found no independent measurement of how much cooler any of these makes a UK conservatory, so we say where each fix works rather than quote a percentage.

Why a conservatory gets too hot

Sunlight passes through glazing and warms whatever it lands on, and a conservatory is mostly glazing, roof included. Which way it faces matters as well. UKHSA lists homes with “large east, west or south-facing windows which do not have shade from the sun” among those more likely to overheat, which is a fair description of a conservatory in full sun. Checked 14 September 2026.

That is why the free fixes are about timing and air, and the paid ones are about stopping the sun reaching the glass, or reaching you. We have found no independent measurement of how hot UK conservatories get in summer, so this page gives no temperature.

No overheating standard applies to a conservatory added to an existing home. Approved Document O, the overheating regulation, “only applies to new residential buildings”, and the government's own guidance says it does not apply to conservatories added after a home is built. If a quote cites it for your conservatory, ask why.

How much of the sun your roof lets through

The number that decides summer heat is the g-value, also called the solar factor: the share of the sun’s energy a roof lets through. The U-value quoted on most roofs measures heat loss, which is the winter number.

Read the two tables separately. Direct transmission counts only the sunlight that passes straight through, not the heat the sheet absorbs and passes on, so an 8 per cent sheet cannot be set against a 22 per cent glass.

What the first table shows is that glass against plastic is the wrong question. A clear polycarbonate roof lets through a similar share of the sun's energy to standard low-E glass. The tint or the coating is what moves the number: solar control glass lets through 17 to 42 per cent, against 53 to 70.5 per cent for standard low-E. The cost is light. Across the Pilkington Suncool range, light transmission falls from 70 per cent to 28 per cent as the g-value falls from 0.42 to 0.17.

Manufacturer technical data, checked 20 August and 14 September 2026. The polycarbonate solar factors come from a data sheet dated 2015, the most recent we have found that publishes them. All figures are for the glazing, not the frame: the government defines g-values as centre pane values that “should not include the effect of frames”.

How to cool down a conservatory for free

1. Open up when the air outside is cooler

UKHSA's advice for any home is to “open windows (when it is safe to do so) when the air feels cooler outside, for example at night, and try to get air flowing through the home.” In a conservatory that means opening the windows and doors in the evening, and roof vents if you have them, so the air can move through. Checked 14 September 2026.

2. Keep the door to the house shut

A hot conservatory open to the house makes the house hot. The door is doing legal work too: one of the Planning Portal's conditions for the conservatory exemption is separation from the house “by external quality walls, doors or windows”. A conservatory knocked through to the kitchen is not exempt.

Roof vents, if you have none

Opening roof vents can be added to an existing conservatory, glass roofs included. We hold no published price for fitting one, so ask for it as a separate line on any quote. If a new solid roof is the plan, the cost of rooflights in a solid conservatory roof is set out separately.

How to block out the sun on a conservatory roof

There are three places to stop it: outside the glass, on the glass, or just inside it.

Outside the glass: awnings and shade sails

UKHSA's checklist says “external shutters, roller blinds or awnings are also very effective.” Shade outside the roof stops the sun before it reaches the glass. We have found no published price for an awning or a shade sail on a conservatory, so this rung has no figure. What would give it one: two installer quotes for the same roof.

On the glass: solar control film, £700 to £1,840

Fitted film for a typical conservatory is £700 to £1,840. Reasonably evidenced, three publishers, 2025 to 2026, checked 14 September 2026. The scopes differ: one publisher prices the whole conservatory and gives a lower floor of £500 elsewhere on the same page, and the other two price the roof only. Film is also sold by the square metre, but publishers measure that against different areas, floor or glass, so a price per square metre is only comparable within one quote.

Check the glass before film goes on. Film puts glass under thermal stress, and ordinary annealed glass tolerates far less of it than toughened: one film installer puts the limit at roughly a 35 to 58°C difference across an annealed pane, against up to about 250°C for toughened glass. Low-E coated sealed units need a compatibility check first. Thin evidence, one publisher, undated, checked 14 September 2026. Ask the installer to confirm in writing which glass you have.

Just inside the glass: roof blinds, from £1,200

Manual roof blinds fitted at 3m × 3m are £1,200 to £2,500. Reasonably evidenced, two publishers, 19 June 2026, checked 14 September 2026. A blind under the roof stops direct sun reaching you and cuts the glare, but it sits inside the glass, so the heat has already come through by the time it meets the blind.

Fans and air conditioning in a conservatory

A ceiling fan: £290 to £860, supplied and fitted

£60 to £350 for the fan and £230 to £510 to fit it. Thin evidence, one publisher, May 2024, which is older than we would like, checked 14 September 2026. A fan moves air rather than cooling it, and UKHSA's advice is to “use electric fans if the air temperature is below 35°C, but do not aim the fan directly at your body as this can lead to dehydration.” A ceiling fan is fixed electrical work, and fixed electrical installations have to comply with the Building Regulations even in an exempt conservatory.

A portable unit: £300 to £420

A 12,000 BTU portable air conditioner is £300 to £420 to buy. Thin evidence, one publisher, May 2026, checked 14 September 2026. A manufacturer’s guide last edited in January 2025 put a standing unit at around £200, without saying what size.

Fixed split air conditioning: £1,980 to £2,970 with the electrics

For one room at 12,000 BTU, the unit is £620 to £890 and fitting it is £960 to £1,380, which is £1,580 to £2,270. The same publisher says £400 to £700 of electrical work has to be added, so the job is £1,980 to £2,970 in all. Thin evidence, one publisher, May 2026, checked 14 September 2026. Running it costs 20p to 60p an hour on the same publisher's figures.

A split system has to be fitted by a certified company. Government guidance says a company must be certified to install, repair, maintain or decommission stationary air conditioning, and that “it is against the law to work with F gas if you don't have the correct certification.” Ask for the company's F-gas certificate, issued by a body such as Refcom, Bureau Veritas or the F-Gas Register. Guidance last updated August 2019.

The outdoor unit and planning. In England, permitted development for an outdoor unit comes from Class G of the General Permitted Development Order, and one of its conditions is that the unit “is not solely used for the purpose of cooling”. A cooling-only unit is not covered by that permission, so ask your council before it goes on the wall.

Solar control glass or tinted roof sheets

If the roof is due for replacement anyway, the spec is where summer heat gets decided. A new glass roof at 3m × 3m is £2,000 to £7,000, typically £4,000. Reasonably evidenced, four publishers, checked 20 August 2026. Choosing solar control glass takes the sun's energy let through down to 17 to 42 per cent, at the cost of some daylight. Sizes, coatings and prices are on glass conservatory roof cost.

A like-for-like polycarbonate roof at 3m × 3m is £1,900 to £3,500. Reasonably evidenced, two publishers, April 2024 and July 2026, checked 20 August 2026. Glass on the same roof costs £500 to £1,000 more, Thin evidence, one publisher, 15 August 2024. On a sheet roof the tint decides the heat: at 25mm, direct sun through the sheet runs from 63 per cent for clear down to 8 per cent for a heat-reflective grade, on Ultraframe's figures. The sheet options are compared on what replacing a polycarbonate roof costs.

Neither upgrade has a published price of its own. No publisher we have found prices solar control glass separately from standard low-E, or a tinted sheet separately from clear, so ask for both on the same quote.

Price the roof end of the ladder

When a solid roof is the lasting fix: £6,000 to £11,000 at 3m × 3m

A tiled or solid roof at 3m × 3m is £6,000 to £11,000 installed including VAT, typically £8,075. Well evidenced, four publishers agreeing within 1.05x on the floor. Checked 20 August 2026. It is the dearest fix here and the only one that takes the glazing out of the roof, so the sun no longer comes in through the top of the room.

It is not the whole answer. The walls are still glazed, the room loses the daylight the roof let in, and the conservatory stops being exempt: the work goes to building control and the roof has to meet 0.15 W/m²K under Approved Document L Table 4.2.

That makes the choice simpler than a list of ten suggests. If the room is only hard to use in a hot spell, film, blinds or a fan cost a fraction of this. If it is too hot to use on most sunny days and the roof is near the end of its life anyway, start with what a new conservatory roof costs, then get conservatory roof quotes for yours.

Too hot in summer and too cold in winter

Summer heat is the sun getting in. Winter cold is heat getting out, and it has its own set of fixes, priced on keeping a conservatory warm in winter. A solid roof is the one fix on both lists.

An insulated ceiling under the existing roof is £1,050 to £2,750 at 3m × 3m, depending on the finish. Thin evidence, one publisher, 2 July 2026, checked 20 August 2026. We have found no independent measurement of what one does to a conservatory in summer, so we make no claim either way. UKHSA's advice when insulating any home is to “ask installers for advice about reducing overheating”. Prices by method are on what conservatory insulation costs.

Questions people ask first

How do I stop my conservatory from getting so hot?
Stop the sun before it reaches the glass, and let the heat out when the air outside is cooler. The free steps are opening up in the evening and keeping the door to the house shut. The cheapest priced fix is a ceiling fan at £290 to £860 fitted, and the cheapest that works on the glass itself is solar control film at £700 to £1,840. Checked 14 September 2026.
Do conservatory roof blinds reduce heat?
They stop direct sun reaching you and cut the glare, but they sit inside the glass, so the heat has already come through by the time it meets the blind. We have found no independent measurement of how much cooler they keep a conservatory. UKHSA describes external shutters, roller blinds and awnings as very effective. Manual roof blinds are £1,200 to £2,500 fitted at 3m × 3m.
What can I put on my conservatory roof to stop the sun?
Outside, an awning or a shade sail, which nobody publishes a conservatory price for. On the glass, solar control film at £700 to £1,840 fitted. Under the glass, roof blinds. On a polycarbonate roof, a tinted or heat-reflective sheet: at 25mm, direct sun through the sheet falls from 63 per cent for clear to 8 per cent for a heat-reflective grade, on Ultraframe's figures.
Is it safe to put film on a conservatory roof?
Usually, if the glass suits it. Film puts glass under thermal stress, ordinary annealed glass tolerates far less of that than toughened glass, and low-E coated sealed units need a compatibility check first. Ask the installer to confirm in writing which glass you have before any film goes on.
Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in a conservatory?
It can depend on the unit. In England, permitted development for an outdoor unit under Class G does not cover one “solely used for the purpose of cooling”, so a cooling-only unit needs your council's view before it goes on the wall.
Can I fit air conditioning in a conservatory myself?
Not a split system. A company must be certified to install stationary air conditioning, and government guidance says “it is against the law to work with F gas if you don't have the correct certification.” The electrical work, £400 to £700 on top of the unit and fitting, also has to comply with the Building Regulations, even in an exempt conservatory.
Is a hot conservatory a health risk?
It can be for some people. UKHSA names people aged 65 and over, children aged 5 and under, and people with long-term health conditions as more at risk, and says “a hot home can worsen existing health conditions and can be fatal.” Its keep cool at home checklist is the place to start.
