Lightweight Conservatory Roofs and What Your Frame Can Carry

Lightweight is a claim a manufacturer makes about a system, not a material you can buy. Two systems on the UK market publish a kilogram figure to back it. Here is what they weigh, what the weight actually decides, and why the number that matters is not on the roof at all but inside your existing frames. What does lightweight mean on a conservatory roof?

It means the finished roof weighs 31 to 38 kg per square metre, on the two systems in the UK market that publish a figure at all. We grade that Reasonably evidenced: it is manufacturer technical data rather than a third-party estimate, but it comes from one manufacturer covering two of its own products, and the rest of the market publishes nothing. The word is doing a job in a sales conversation. A conservatory frame was designed to hold up glazing, so every solid roof sold onto an existing frame has to argue that it is light enough to go there. “Lightweight” is that argument compressed into one word, and it is not regulated, not defined and not measured to any common standard. Two manufacturers back it with a number. The others assert it.

That distinction matters more than it sounds, because the weight of the roof is not what usually stops a job. The load a solid roof adds is small and well documented. What is not documented, on any conservatory anywhere, is whether the frames underneath it were built to carry it. That is the whole argument of this page. Which systems are genuinely light, and what each one weighs

Two published weights exist. We are not going to fill the rest of the column with estimates, because an invented kilogram figure on a structural page is exactly the failure this site is built against.

What would close it: a written weight per square metre for the finished build-up, in the manufacturer's own technical manual, for SupaLite, Guardian, Equinox and Leka. Ask for it, in writing, before you sign. The specification of the system most often sold as the light one is set out on SupaLite conservatory roofs.

Two names that are not lightweight roofs at all

Ultraframe Loggia is an insulated structural column system, rebranded Super Insulated Columns. The manufacturer's own wording is that your chosen roof sits on top of the columns. Its published 0.15 W/m²K is a column figure, not a roof figure. Ultraframe Classic is a glazed aluminium roof: BBA 96/3261 lists its glazing as 25mm or 35mm sevenwall polycarbonate, or a 24mm low-E argon sealed unit. Both are routinely listed as solid roof systems in comparison articles, and neither is one.

Weight against U-value, and why they pull apart

Insulation is what a solid roof is for, and insulation is thickness, and thickness is weight. Every system in this market is a negotiated position between those two, and the compliance floor is what sets where the negotiation starts.

Two readings of that table are worth having. First, almost everything clusters at 0.15 because 0.15 is the England limiting value for a replacement roof, so it is the entry ticket rather than a selling point. Guardian's 0.18 does not meet it, which makes it a legacy figure and a legitimate thing to ask about. Second, the best claimed figure in the market, 0.10, comes with the least published detail. We attribute it rather than assert it. The regulation behind all of this is the 0.15 W/m2K roof standard.

For scale: the best polycarbonate sold in the UK, 55mm tenwall, reaches 0.83 W/m²K, more than five times the 0.15 limiting value.

We will not write “LABC approved”, and here is why

Every publicly downloadable LABC or LABSS certificate we could find in this category is expired on its face: Guardian EW320 to 8 August 2016, SupaLite EW277 to 26 June 2016, Equinox EW606 to 19 July 2017. LABC's live register is members-only, so current validity cannot be checked from outside. The only current dated approvals we located are 12-month Stroma Building Control certificates: UltraRoof380 number 14001 and LivinROOF number 14018, both issued 19 January 2026 and expiring 19 January 2027. Ask for a certificate number and its validity window, not an adjective.

What your frame can carry

This is the section the weight claim exists to serve, and the answer is more reassuring than the sales pitch and more awkward than it looks.

LABC's own addendum on solid roofs to conservatories, published May 2018, puts the load added by a lightweight composite solid roof at approximately 0.5 kN/m, which it describes as less than 10 per cent over a typical translucent roof. It puts the typical loading of the existing glazed roof at under 10 kN/m. On foundations it is direct: in most cases a 150mm thick concrete strip foundation, or a reinforced concrete slab bearing onto original ground, will be adequate, and trial holes may be waived where the load increase is typically less than 15 per cent. The addendum applies to structures under 30 m², at ground floor, thermally separated with external-quality doors.

So the ground is usually fine and the roof is usually light enough. The risk sits in between, in the vertical frames. A conservatory built for a polycarbonate roof may have mullions reinforced only for that lighter load, and there is no way to know from the outside. LABC says to verify steel reinforcement in the mullions by drilling pilot holes or using a magnet test, and that where there is none, new window frames may be needed to support the roof, or reinforcement installed abutting the existing frames.

If that survey comes back badly, the fix runs £800 to £4,000, which we grade Reasonably evidenced and conflicted. Two publishers disagree by 3.75× on the floor: one publisher (May 2026) puts it at £800 to £2,500, which reads as reinforcing the existing frames, and a second (2026) at £3,000 to £4,000, which reads as replacing them. Both are real outcomes of the same survey. We attach no probability to either, because nobody publishes one. Checked 20 August 2026. What a light roof does not get you out of

Weight is a structural question and it is not the regulatory one. Putting a solid roof on a conservatory stops the structure being an exempt conservatory, which makes the work notifiable regardless of what it weighs. That is true of the lightest system on this page.

What a lightweight system costs

Our register has no row for a lightweight roof, because no publisher prices the category. What it has is rows for the named systems that make the claim, and one of those rows contradicts the manufacturer's own arithmetic by about two times. We publish both ends.

The conflict is worth stating plainly rather than averaging away. The manufacturer's own list price of £1,200 per square metre inc VAT implies roughly £20,400 for a 17 m² roof, supply only. A third-party guide prices the same 4m by 4m installed job at £8,000 to £12,000. That is about 2× apart on a job where the second figure includes fitting and the first does not. Our reading, stated as a reading and not as a fact, is a manufacturer list price against installer-network reality. We publish both and average neither.

One itemised real quote exists in our register and it is worth more than any band: a 4m by 4m Victorian SupaLite job at £12,780 including VAT, broken down as roof £8,500, scaffolding £500, six LED downlights £450 and one roof window £1,200 (a UK cost publisher, July 2026, one source, itemised, checked 20 August 2026). An itemised quote is the rarest object in this market. When you get yours, that is the shape it should be in. If the frame will not take it

Where the survey comes back badly enough that reinforcing the frames stops making sense, the honest answer is to price replacing the frames and the roof together. Will my conservatory frame take a lightweight roof?
Usually, and the deciding factor is not the weight. LABC puts the added load at about 0.5 kN/m, under 10 per cent more than a typical translucent roof, and says the foundations are usually adequate. What decides it is whether your mullions contain steel reinforcement, which only a magnet test or a pilot hole answers. Are lightweight roof tiles for a conservatory real tiles?
Mostly they are composite, polypropylene or GRP made to look like slate or a profiled tile. That is what makes the systems light enough to sit on a frame built for glazing. Real slate and clay are available and are a different weight class, which is the reason they are a different page and often a different structural answer.
Does a lightweight roof avoid building regulations?
No. A solid roof of any weight stops the structure being an exempt conservatory, which makes the work notifiable building work in its own right. Weight changes the structural conversation, not the regulatory one, and no competent person scheme covers the job.
Is a lighter roof less insulated?
Not on the published figures. Both systems that publish a weight also publish 0.15 W/m²K as standard with 0.12 as an option, and the lightest published claim in the market, 0.10, comes from a system that publishes no weight at all. What should I ask an installer about weight?
Three things, in writing. The finished weight per square metre of the exact build-up they are quoting. Whether they will drill pilot holes or magnet-test the mullions before the quote is fixed. And the certificate number and validity window for the system, rather than a claim that it is approved by anybody.
